Thieves steal 70 bikes in a month (From Echo)

Oh that's all right then - target bike thieves and whores! And leave the knife crime and armed hold-ups to whom????? I think the priorities are a bit wrong - stop the violent crime and start locking these scumbags up and the lower levels of crime will fall. Before you all start - I am not condoning bike theft and if I had had one stolen I wouldn't be too pleased either but if they have limited resources then lets prioriteise the violent stuff. We have a new commissioner? - lets see Essex Police get on top of their game and start being pro-active about ALL crime!

My friend had his stolen at Basildon train station. I dont think its just Southend and Westcliff, I think other areas need to be targeted to by police. Its no good just targeting a minority of stations, because thieves would simply just move onto a couple of stations down the line. Infact I think it would be good if every station is monitored on the c2c line, Shoebury to Fenchurch street. I think a large number of bikes have been taken at Benfleet too, ive read a few reportings in the past.

"Limited resources" thought the Government said crime was falling. Not on Canvey, yet another armed robbery today and not anywhere in this area either it seems.

I never leave my bike locked up anywhere, too many thieving junkies around, if i go somewhere i cant take it then i keep it at home, and when riding it ive always something in my pocket should anybody be stupid enough to try taking it from me, they will be walking home naked with socket wrench dents in their head so deep they will be able to unscrew bolts with them

We must stop believing Spin crime is not falling it is just people are now not reporting crime for a multitude of reasons.

It is not the fault of the actual Police Officer it is the fault of the system, it is easy to be an armchair policy maker but in reality not one single Police Chief can take figures like that and do nothing.

It is ignorant to say violent crime takes priority when you have reducing resources and a demoralized Service, and Politicians that say crime is falling as a result of information gained through statistics.

Those same statistics are used to judge police forces by the same politicians that want low crime stats to make them look wonderful.

As a result if you have 70 crimes committed in one month that is very high if you compare that with two Brothel raids which is not a recordable crime until a court conviction is gained or two cases of violent crime with no crime reported what offence would you tackle taking into account the requirement of statistics to keep politicians off your back so they can gain votes.

It does not take much to know SOLVE THE CURRENT CRIME WAVE.
Which is cycle theft.

It is a scandal that so many cycles are stolen the effect on a community is bad the effect on a family is a disaster and the cost of replacement can be beyond most families budget.

Stop Blaming the Police start blaming :

Politicians
The Criminal Justice System
The social reformers who care more about criminals than victims.

When a bike worth almost £2000 is stolen - and many bikes are worth that and more these days - that's pretty serious.

That should be 70 bikes off the pavements, seems the thieves are doing the police's work for them.

To be honest, no I don't but I think the People should be given a glimmer of hope as we don't have much else.

I am not a cyclist - I appreciate that bikes have a high value. If a bike is stored, left or randomly propped against a lamppost and gets stolen, there has to be an onus on the owner to make sure that the bike, wherever it is at any time is open to be stolen; akin to leaving your car unlocked, engine running for a quick pop to the shop as has been recorded recently has to be a consideration. So, when the bike is left for a long time at the station, for example whose responsibility does it become? I notice to SBC's credit ( am I saying this?) that there are now in Leigh for example secure rings for bikes - anything to stop them riding on the pavement! There is no solution, has been going on for years and a sad reflection of the total denigration of social behaviour in Southend and elsewhere!

But given the choice of cycling on the road or path, I would choose the path, as most people would. Why? Because now adays there are too many dangerous drivers at the wheel. What would you rather, cycle on the path, with a very, very, small possibilty of being stopped and given a fine of £30, or recieve live changing injuries or dead? With ref to the bikes that have been stolen, my son left his bike locked up out side his college when he come out it was gone, not only does he need his bike to get back and forth to college he also does a paper round to earn his self pocket money for things he needs for college, the bike he bought his self from his hard earned money. so look forward to the Police paroling these areas and preventing another persons bike from being stolen, by the low life scum

olivia you are so right never thougt i would agree with you this time its diffrent the old bill still treat bike theft as a joke if it was a was car nicked they be straight round but a push bike we will give you a crime number for insurerance i dont give a hoot whos in charge now but its getting worse

How are people saying bike theft is not serious? my bike is the single most expensive item in my house apart from my watch, what i don't understand is how with cctv covering our every move 70 bikes can go missing from a small area in a compressed amount of time, and no one is on film or caught in the act.

Don't get too concerned everyone... I mean what are Essex police actually going to do..? Up patrols in the area..? Prevent crime by putting a toothless PCSO next to the bike racks..? Essex police are skint. You really think they have the money to start an operation on theft of pedal cycles...? This is minor crime and is not a priority of theirs.

Your expensive bikes go to the gumtree website and are sold off cheap As chips by some little 'brat' if you ring the police they still can't help you. Track down and find yourself Essex police are useless.

I have had items stolen from my rear garden 7 times in 18 months, the police, as previously said, can't or won't do anything.

I have names of two who have were seen riding my sons bike, we gave the police this info and they have done NOTHING again. So I am in the process of tracking them down.

So when an article like this pops up, it annoys the crap out of me, why aren't they bothered about the 7 times I have had items stolen (mostly push bikes), is it because I don't live in the more affluent areas of the County.

Mind you off to a bad start emailed him about the armed robberies on Canvey and asked him to contact me. Even asked our MP to do the same.

So is this yet another post with a nice big salary and no chance of the public being able to get his help, the very thing he was supposed to be elected for?

Southend Hospital can be added to the list for bike thieves. I know at least two people who have lost their bikes.

When you have so much daytime crime in southend (not all reported in the echo) and around it makes no sense to give priority to theft unless it is burglary.

I will cycle on the pavement as long as there are no pedestrians about.
If there are I will give them a wide berth and slow down or stop.

It just needs a little common sense.
