Multi-vehicle crash blocks Sadlers Farm roundabout

First published in News

DRIVERS suffered long delays as they battled to get home in rush hour after a car overturned at the notorious Sadlers Farm roundabout.

Emergency services, including fire crews from Rayleigh Weir and Basildon, raced to the scene just after 5pm following reports of a serious multi-vehicle crash and that a man was trapped in his car after it ended up on its roof.

However, once emergency services arrived it was established that it was not as serious as first feared.

An East of England Ambulance Service spokeswoman said two cars and two vans were involved in the crash.

She said: “One man in his 50s was the only patient, he sustained minor injuries and was not taken to hospital.”

Firefighters made sure the man’s vehicle was stable and the driver managed to get himself out, he did not need to be cut out of the car.

The roundabout was blocked between the B1464 London Road and the A130 with traffic queuing on all approaches, causing rush hour misery for hundreds of motorists.

A 25-year old driver, who did not want to be named, was delayed by almost half an hour trying to get home to Basildon from Canvey.

She said: “The police had closed the lane off the roundabout heading into Benfleet and directed all traffic towards the Chelmsford bound A130.

“It’s really annoying when these things happen in rush hour because all you want to do is get home after a long day at work, particularly in winter when it’s dark and cold.

“I’m glad no one was seriously hurt, but it’s so frustrating when there’s a crash at Sadlers because it just has such a knock-on effect on all routes around it.”

Absolutely dangerous round Sadlers now down to the ridiculous signage/roadworks etc. Why haven't these contractors been told you are meant to put warning signs about 10 yards prior to the hazard not when cars are actually on the hazard e.g. lane closures, narrowing etc.

That accident can be explained by one idiot driving like a lunatic.

It is painfully obvious to anyone with a brain that at this moment of time especially at that time of day driving slowly is a sensible thing to do and if you drive at a sensible speed cars do not tip over.

Another common occurrence that we see everyday one idiot driving at a dangerous speed.

This is a regular occurrence on our roads always caused by at least one nutter!

Sorry, an innocent slow moving car can tip over if hit in the side, at force, by another car.

It doesn't matter whether it's Sadlers Farm, or anywhere else. Agreed that road markings and lane planning are abysmal, but when all is said and done it is all due to ATTITUDE! " Me First. Got to Get There."
Tailgating is as catching as measles and increasing all the time, often by trades vehicles, stupid manoeuvres too - and you usually see the culprit held up at the next junction.
How are we ever going to stop this ME FIRST ATTITUDE????

The problem with Sadlers Farm is that drivers cannot follow lane markings - very simple!

Of course this is not helped by the ongoing poor management of the roadworks both by ECC and the contractors working there.

The actual markings are now far better and far more sensible than when they were first put in.

However, the old roundabouts worked fine - and we need more roundabouts like that - not less.

There are near misses at Sadlers every day. Drivers seem unable to comprehend basic roadcraft, and lane discipline. Look around you and watch the BIG white writing and lane markings in the road. It may give a few of you a clue as to where you're going wrong.

And in all this is there anyone other than the designer of this multi million pound project, Essex County Council and some Councillors seriously believe there has been any tangible improvement for drivers other than those going to or from the A13 to the A130? Why is the filter road from Canvey Way to the A13 shorter than before? You have to have a neck like an owl to see if there is any traffic coming from Benfleet because it is far too tight to use side mirrors.

Sadlers Farm roundabout is a bloody nightmare now. Even with traffic lights, people are edging forward to be first away from the lights. I agree with Jilly from Leigh, in the Me First Attitude too. I've lived here since 1984 and driven many times around Sadlers Farm roundabout as it was. Now they'e widened the road through to Basildon giving four lanes instead, there's no end of drivers coming from Canvey and at the last minute switching from the twin lanes leading to Pitsea/Tesco roundabout to the main A13. Yes there is signage, but the last time I was driven along there the other week at night - there was no lighting on the signage! Road cones are all over the place, the Bus Lane from the old A13 is half available, with arrows directing left, then also directing traffic to the Tarpots direction. I flatly refuse to use it myself until it's fully completed. I'd far rather go the longer way round via Rayleigh Weir to the A127 - it's considerably safer.

I like to know how the designer thought the current layout would be an improvement.
Who uses the bypass from the A130 to the A13???
If you are on the A127 going london bound why would you go down to sadlers farm when you can turn off at pound lane (if pitsea is needed) or continue onto london.
If you are coming down from chelmsford to pitsea there are better routes than hitting sadlers farm.

A flyover should have been done for the A130 then the only traffic using the roundabout would be the A13 traffic.

I certainly don't worry about idiots crashing - I do worry about my journey being affected because someone can't be bothered to drive properly. I know the facts of the case are not available, but I doubt it was a mechanical failure of the vehicle, doubt it was due to a sudden illness of the driver so can only assume that it was driver error. It's not too hard to drive within the speed limit and be aware of what is around you!
