Residents urged to "travel with caution" as winter sets in

WITH heavy snowfall expected to hit Essex this afternoon, Essex County Council is urging residents to travel with caution.

A fleet of 60 gritting lorries will be treating roads across the county from midday today, Monday, and further runs will take place as needed.

Gritters were out from 4pm yesterday, Sunday, and again from 3am this morning treating roads ahead of Monday's rush hour.

County councillor Derrick Louis, cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: "I am urging all residents to travel carefully today with the heavy snowfall we are currently expecting.

"Our gritters will be out across the county but please still take extra caution, particularly on pavements and side roads."

The gritting lorries can be tracked live by visiting www.essex.gov.uk/highways.

Residents can also receive the latest gritting updates by following @Essex_Travel on Twitter.

Essex Highways is required to focus resources on keeping major roads clear, so it operates a specified salting network. This includes all A and B roads, access routes for emergency services, rural link roads and major public transport routes.

Thanks for the information. However, looking at the map, the Southend area appears not to have any routes that will be gritted, I assume this is due to it being an unitary aithority. Is there any chance you can publish details odf what SBC plan to do to keep the borouigh's road clear?

Certainly didn't work the last few times we have had snow. I drove to London, & the only difficulty I had was in Southend!

Thank you, I am aware of that, but maybe the Echo would like to publish the details. Also, as I am sure you are aware, the roads in Southend, for which SBC are responsible for, were not cleared the last few times there was snow - in marked contrast to those under the responsibility of ECC. For example, the A13 was uncleared with the Southend Borough area, whilst elsewhere, all the way to London it had been.
Therefore, it would be helpful if SBC were to publicise what they were doing via local news media.

No, the world will not end, but SBC are supposed to keep the trunk routes within the borough clear, something they continually fail to do.
