Southend rail bridge works get started

DRAMATIC work to replace Southend High Street's 130-year-old railway bridge is under way.

Workers from Network Rail have spent the morning securing the area around the bridge and have now begun to move the steel structure.

Dozens of shoppers have gathered around the spectacle, which is expected to go on for most of the day.

Ted Williams, 63, of Ness Road, Shoebury, said: "I've come down here today just to watch it.

"It's been a landmark there for so long. I wanted to watch it go."

The bridge's £2million replacement will be put in place later this afternoon, while works to restore the tracks go on tomorrow.

The whole project is expected to be finished in time for the morning rush hour on Monday.

It has taken Railtrack about 6 weeks to do the bridge at Benfleet, and it is still not finished.

So I do not expect Southend to be finished soon if the same poor workforce are involved.

You seem to have a lot of time on your hands? Couldn't you lend one?

The engineering and method of it's undertaking was of great intrest, prehaps all those that are moaning and making snide remarks about the workforce should try undertaking such works themselves to see and hopfully understand the logistics, complexity and skills needed to carry out such an undertaking.

It was also nice to speak to Nick from the Southend Timeline.
