Five people rescued from flood waters in Hullbridge

FIVE people had to be rescued from their stranded vehicles after driving into flood water.

Firefighters were called to Watery Lane, in Hullbridge, at about 6.20pm tonight to save the occupants of three stricken vehicles.

The swift water rescue team helped them back to dry land by 7.24pm.

A spokesman for Essex Fire and Rescue said: "Crews continue to stress the dangers of driving into flood water but these, and warning signs at the scene, continued to be ignored at this notorious flood blackspot."

why would emergency services be required to help them to dry land..? if it was a raging torrent 6 foot deep i could understand it.... i know watery lane well and i can't for the life of me recall it being like that in my 40 years.maybe they didn't want to get their hush puppies wet.

Problem is the signs are still displayed even when the road is dry without water - therefore the locals tend to ignore the signs.

Exactly, what a complete waste of money the emergency services and all of us tax payers can't afford. Why would anybody try driving through it anyway. Send them the bill

i hope their insurance companies rject the claims. I was visiting image flooring the week who are sited just next to the flooded part and the amount of idiots who still tried to pass the flood was amazing. The signs are left in position for a period of time due to water draining off fields for a long time after rain and the water does reach fairly high levels which makes opening car doors difficult. If people do drive down there they will find the water is built up on the tight bends and turning round is difficult on that section.

Hope the emergency services invoice these muppets for ignoring the signs!

I *needed* to use that road the other night to get from Hullbridge to South Woodham but saw the signs and took the long way round..... wasn't too hard to read the sign saying "Road Closed" and only added 5mins or so to my journey

Well "Watery Lane " is a bit of a clue isn't it? Another example of twerps who think, " It doesn't apply to me".Just leave them there and that will close the road.
