Woman trapped under bus at Southend bus depot

A WOMAN had to be rescued by firefighters after she became trapped under a bus.

Three appliances from Southend fire station were called to the bus depot in Chichester Road, Southend, just before 6.15pm.

The driver had been pulling into the depot when he heard a loud bang.

As he stepped off the bus he realised a woman, in her 40s, has become trapped underneath.

Firefighters used airbags to lift the bus and successfully free the woman by 6.40pm.

Sub-officer Frank Parkinson said: "At this stage we don't know how the incident happened.

"When we got to the scene she was talking to us which is always a good sign, but she might have sustained injuries to her legs and pelvis.

"The bus driver was understandably very shaken up."

All passengers were forced to leave the bus.

The woman was taken by paramedics to Southend Hospital.

As buses pull into that stop, the edge of the buses often ride just over the edge of the kerbs which you can see from the buses corners and the kerbs. the kerbs are too high for the buses. that depot is a disaster - too narrow, not enough room for buses. I hope the lady is not too hurt.

If that was true why has it been signed off by the DfT with all it's Health & Safety checkes passed?

If there was any issues with the construction or safty it would have been closed down until the issues were fixed.

Unless you were there and saw what happened how can you jump to conclusion, how do we know the lady did not step off the kerb as the bus came in?

Yes, it's so comforting to know that now we have DfT and their Health and Safety to rely on and they will never make mistakes!

You seem to be calling Jollyboy a liar? He never claimed this was what had happened in this instance, he was commenting on own his observations of what he HAD seen happen with the buses at that spot in the past.

I dont think speed is a factor in this case. There are enough signs stating that pedestrians are prohibited from walking in the bus station - not that anyone takes any notice of course.
If the bus mounted the pavement then obviously the driver is at fault. As this did not happen we can only assume at this stage that the woman, for what ever reason decicded to step off the pavement prior to the bus stopping. All will be revealed in due course once the camera films from the bus and bus station have been downloaded.
