AN elderly man was rushed to hospital after he was hit by a taxi in Wickford.

The man, believed to be in his eighties, was hit by the taxi as he was crossing the road on Wickford High Street at the junction of Halls Corner just before 10am on Tuesday morning.

The man, who was thought to be pushing a trolley at the time, was taken to Basildon Hospital with what the ambulance service described as ‘non-life threatening’ injuries.

David Chase, 64, from Wickford said he was told by a witness that the taxi knocked down the two people, one of whom was pushing a trolley.

“A woman told me that there was a lot of screaming and worried bystanders around the people on the floor. It sounds pretty terrible and I can only hope the man was alright. I believe he was an elderly man so I hope it’s not too serious.”

The taxi involved was an Allied Taxis service car, which are licensed by Basildon Council.

CCTV footage and will be investigating why the accident took place. It is unknown whether the traffic lights were signalling red or green at the time.

Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information should call the Laindon Policing Unit on 101.
