LIVE: Southend Council budget
SOUTHEND Council has approved £10million cuts for the next financial year.
After a fraught four hour debate, councillors voted 32 to 16 to pass the suggestions put forward by the ruling Tory party.
A raft of amendments posed by the opposition, which included keeping the pier open throughout the winter and retaining free black bin bags, were earlier rejected by just six votes.
Airshow campaigners left disappointed as the annual show's demise was confirmed as a formality.

We are on a frightening "tunnel of fear" journey this year. Just wait and see what happens when services are cut, and those who cannot complain start to suffer.

The much-publicised threatened cuts to adult & elderly care (including, I believe the closure/privatisatio
n of at least one council-run home) are worrying to say the least. However, I need to study the budget in more detail before I can comment further on this issue.
The ending of free black bags for all may not seem to be of great importance, but I feel it is. I fear that many people will use their existing stock of pink recycling bags for general waste (I understand these will still be distributed free as well), meaning that neither the general or recycling waste teams will collect them, resulting in rubbish being left on the streets, attracting vermin of various forms. I can also see the possibility of "jobsworths" refusing to collect any waste that may be left in other bags, such as carrier bags, resulting in the same situation. I'm not saying that we must keep free black sacks, but it would be nice, merely that we need to ensure this doesn't cause a build up of uncollected waste on ours streets.
Like others, I think this is only the beginning of what will be a very painful process for the residents of Southend.

Pink bags, I can understand.
Maybe Southend, should become part of Essex again and stop being a unitary authority?
