New beach huts for Shoebury's East Beach

FIFTEEN new beach huts will be built in Shoebury.

Southend Council has been granted planning permission - the last hurdle it had to clear - for the grand project on East Beach.

Chiefs have earmarked about £120,000 to build the huts, which they then hope to sell to beach-lovers for a substantial profit.

However, the scheme was nearly derailed by a concerted campaign which argued the new huts could not be reached by people in wheelchairs.

Speaking at the development control committee meeting at which planning permission was granted, Mike Assenheim, an Independent councillor for Shoebury, said: “These huts simply should not go ahead until this issue has been resolved.

“We have to do more to ensure people with disabilities are able to access them.

“To not have access is stopping them from even considering whether they would like to buy one of these huts.”

However, Roger Hadley, a Tory councillor for Shoebury, disagreed.

The huts will be built on a concrete strip at the head of the beach which was the foundation for a row of similar huts 30 years ago.

Mr Hadley said: “Beach huts have already been on that site, so it makes no sense to say they shouldn’t go back there.

“As it is, that concrete is a real eyesore and is rarely used by anybody.

“Let’s just get on with doing this and remedying that issue.”

How can it cost £120,000 to make 15 beach huts ? That is £8000 each. I bet the job was given to a council crony. Lets say you took down an old wooden beach hut, disposed of it, made new foundations with pillars sunk in concrete blocks and buried , rebuilt a new beach hut in wood and treated it to a coat of creosote, I would still expect change from £5000 just for a single one. So ordering in bulk and putting them on a concrete base should be much cheaper, say £3000 each so £45,000 max. For the base use concrete canvas http://concretecanva

You could even make the beach huts out of concrete canvas and they will last forever and be water proof and fire proof http://youtu.be/vv3S

Skanky bit of beach that is a target for druggies ,nutters and vandals...lets not forget the cafe that burned down yards away.
These huts are tucked away thus ideal for trashing ..just watch!!!!!!!

What this is really saying is that they hope to sell to rich mugs who the council can see coming. It will be interesting to see how much they will sell for (or how much people will be willing to pay).
It is also an admission that the plan was for the council to make a quick few quid over that of the improvement of the leisure use of East Beach, all along.

Clearly Mr Hadley never visits Eastbeach. That area is one of the busiest parts of Eastbeach all year round.
