New Southend Airport terminal to open by June

The new terminal being built The new terminal being built

SOUTHEND Airport’s new terminal extension will be open by June.

Airport bosses hope to be using part of the £10million building - an expanded arrivals area - by the time a fourth easyJet aircraft arrives this summer.

The rest of the extension, which will add an extra 90 metres to the existing building and create 300 jobs, is due to open in phases by the end of the year.

Alastair Welch, the airport’s managing director, said: “We want to make sure that we continue to deliver a very special level of customer service for our passengers in Southend and this extension ensures that we will continue to deliver those high standards as the airport grows.

“The extension is taking shape and the work is on track to hit our target of an extended arrivals area by the time the fourth easyJet aircraft arrives in June to make its new home in Southend and flights to Berlin, Krakow and Newquay get under way.”

Well done Stobarts, an extra 300 jobs is great news.

I expect some will will find fault with the more jobs are being created at the airport...

This is fantastic news. Let's hope this means more landing slots used by larger planes, bringing in more flights and further jobs to the area.

The airport is expanding, which is great news for everyone. It´s nice to read positive news amongst so much gloom and doom in this rag.

I do. In fact I probably live closer to the runway than anyone posting on this site.

It is an airport. It always has been. Expect some noise.

It is minimal. Anyone who claims otherwise is a liar or has a very active imagination. Or just an axe to grind (Which is probably closer to the truth than anything else)

I am sorry, but i do live under the flightpath and the noise is not minimal, i assume you must be death!!! yes it is good news about the jobs, but it does come at a price for though who do live under the flight path and before anybody says u knew the airport was there, yes you are correct I did, but when I brought my house 22 years ago, there was nothing in my deeds or land searches to say that the runway would or could be extended, if I could afford to move I would.

"I assume you must be death" ???? Now that's serious and spooky all at the same time :-) Seriously though...no airport is quiet. There is noise from landing and reverse jet thrust and take-off. I am sure those living very near are badly affected by this noise. The noise is certainly not minimal. I don't live right under the flight path but I can hear every jet clearly. 300 jobs is great and to be applauded but let us not pretend that the airport is quiet and unobtrusive - it isn't.

Nope, Hang on, I'm very much alive.

You want to move, get compo or are otherwise upset. 22 years eh? Well there were bigger and noisier jets using it during that period.

Traffic on Southend Road is worse.

Where do you live then? Most traffic would be a minimum of 1,500 feet above your house I imagine. Probably much more but I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt.

At least 1 kilometre from the perimter of the airport then. I've been on Nestuda Way when planes have either landed or taken off and you can hardly hear a thing. And that's nearer. You've been there for 22 years and have just started complaining.??

Methinks thou doth protest too much.

When you moved into your house in 1991 (22 years ago you said) Southend airport was a night freight hub with some of the noisiest aircraft of the day, such as the Electra, operating multiple night flights. It must have been very noisy at night yet, from what you say, it seems your vendors didn't mention this. What did you say to them when you found this out in the first week of occupancy?
In 1991 there were 62,872 aircraft movements; double what there are today.
You live 1.5km from the point at which aircraft normally get airborne and 300 metres to the north of the take-off path so I'm rather surprised that you suffer such noise nuisance now, with aircraft such as the A319 being less than half as noisy as the Electra, when you didn't seem to 22 years ago. Very odd.
