Shooting in Southend not a 'random attack.'

Police step up patrols Police step up patrols

THE victim of a shooting in a Southend street is believed to have known his attackers.

Police are not treating the incident in York Road as a ‘random attack’ and say they suspect those behind the shooting were from London.

The victim, a man in his mid-20s, is also from London although officers would not reveal what the motive of the attack was.

He suffered a gunshot wound to his left thigh and has undergone surgery. He now remains in hospital but police are not saying which one to protect him.

His condition is not being treated as life-threatening and detectives have been able to interview him.

They are now seeking any witnesses who were in the area when the shooting happened.

Chief Insp Dave Colwell, Southend’s district commander, said: “It appears that the parties knew each other rather than it being a random attack.” T

he incident was reported at 12.40am and a firearms team was deployed along with local officers. Within 20 minutes they had arrested four men.

The men, two aged 18, and a 23 and 25-year-old, have now been bailed until May 13.

Mr Colwell said they would also be stepping up patrols, but said: “I want to reassure people this is an isolated incident and untypical for this area.”

Anyone with information about the shooting, which happened near to the junction with Baltic Avenue, should call Southend CID on 0300 333 4444 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

I think its stating the obvious, by informing us it was not a random shooting. 4 guys are not likely to bang at strangers door in the early hours, to shoot him in the leg.

What I find more interesting is "The men, two aged 18, and a 23 and 25-year-old, have now been bailed until May 13."

The police would clearly seem to have the correct people (& recovered the gun, or you would expect them to warn the public that a loaded gun has been stashed somewhere locally) So why are they bailed ? Surely this is a case to be placed on remand until the case. Especially as they are a clear danger to at least one member of the public.

Well that's because we don't have all the facts of the police investigation and procedures.

I agree with the first bit though, was there really anybody who thought this was a random attack!

Our purple flag will be up for renewal soon. Will this shooting be mentioned in the renewal application?

..only if there is any space left after mentioning the armed robberies, the knife-wielding muggers and other assaults.
