Disgraced peer told cough up - or go to court

Lord Hanningfield. Lord Hanningfield.

LORD Hanningfield has been asked by County Hall to repay wrongly-claimed expenses - or face another appearance in court.

Essex County Council has written to its former leader demanding he repays any expenditure occurred for personal use.

Now members of the council’s audit committee are being asked to consider launching a civil claim through the courts if the disgraced peer, real name Paul White, does not cough up.

The seven-strong committee meets on Monday to debate the report.

He is unlikely to 'cough up' as he cannot see that he has done any wrong. There is a saying, isn't there?

And this man still has a say in the way our country is run. At least Huhne resigned. But as Gay Ray says he cannot see what he has done wrong.

There is no way he will pay up. How are ECC going to prove the expenses were for personal use?

Maybe they should investigate local cllrs who attract payments for participating on ECC boards and never actually turn up instead.

Be fair please, the poor old boy has hit hard times and needs time to pay.

In latest House of Lords expenditure list in October he only trousered £4,800 in attendance allowance for turning up on 16 days but at least he put in a full attendance. Also claimed £383 attendance travel costs, £58 car parking and £250 rail/ferry/coach fares.

So this over-privileged lord in a position of supreme trust abuses said trust and trousers thousands - he gets 9 months, serves a quarter of it and is then allowed to carry on his day job.

Meanwhile, Anderson Fernandes who has no such trust or responsibility bestowed on him gets 16 months for nicking an ice cream.

Would be nice to be in Hanningfield's club, I have to say.
