MPs criticised for sitting on the fence over blood test move

THE ECHO exclusively revealed yesterday how blood testing was staying in south Essex.

Our campaign has been victorious, thanks largely to you, our dedicated readers.

Relieved Southend Hospital pathologists were told the service was staying local - and their jobs were safe.

The news came after months of uncertainty. But now questions are being asked of those in authority.

Throughout the campaign the regional health authority NHS Midlands and East refused to answer our detailed questions about how the process would work, should it go ahead.

Southend and Basildon Hospitals said, and continue to say, they cannot comment.

And, most notably, each of our six MPs either remained silent on the matter or would not back the campaign - which by the tone of comments on our website have angered the public.

Popular comments include ‘toeing the party line’ and ‘sitting on the fence’. Dr Michael Mills, retired consultant haematologist and clinical director of pathology services at Southend Hospital, said: “I have been greatly saddened and disillusioned by the apparent lack of support and commitment shown by our local MPs.

“It is difficult to believe they took the time to read and digest all the information and the advice offered by people with experience of these services.

“I cannot help but wonder whether their silent, sitting on the fence attitude was due to pressure from above and therefore when push came to shove their careers took precedence over their duty to their constituents.”
