We want dangerous Benfleet cycle track repaired
3:00pm Friday 23rd August 2013 in News
A COUNCILLOR is calling for urgent action to repair damaged and “dangerous” cycle tracks along a busy dual carriageway inBenfleet.
Conservative councillor Clive Walter has criticised the cycle tracks and pavements along the A13, between Clare Road and Tarpots, after they were ripped up to allow for work to be carried out in connection with Sadlers Farm last year.
The pavements are lined with cracks and potholes which Mr Walter claims make it hazardous to bike users and pedestrians.
Concerns have also been raised about a steep new ramp along London Road which makes it difficult for people using electric wheelchairs to navigate around safely.
Now, 15 months later, the Tory councillor is frustrated improvements have yet to be made.
He said: “Here we are, a borough that hosted the Olympic mountain biking event and we can’t even get a simple cycle lane right.
“The first complaint to me was a lady who used a mobility scooter. That was 15 months ago and she has sadly passed away since, so that just shows how long it’s taking.
“In that time we’ve been through three different cabinet members who have been head of highways.
“The general uneven state of the surface is hazardous to people and there is no clear delineation or coloured tarmac showing what is the pavement and where the bicycle lane is.
“It is dangerous for people to ride along there.
“In addition, it is the main entrance to the borough – dowe really want it to look like this?”
A spokesman for Essex Highways said: “We are aware of the footpath condition in this area, following concerns raised by members of the public.
“Officers will work with the on-site contractor to assess what potential works could be undertaken.”
