Superstore alert as travellers move to Asda’s car park
10:26am Friday 30th August 2013 in News
A GROUP of travellers have moved into a superstore car park in Shoebury.
Two motor homes are currently parked by a fence at the back of the carpark at Asda, on North Shoebury Road.
John Clarke,a builder from Southend, noticed the travellers on his commute to work, and says they had been at the site for a week.
He said: “We have to cut through the car park to get to a building we’re working on nearby.
“They have motor homes with a small car towed behind, so they can drive around without using the motorhome, and all their washing is hanging on the fences.”
Christine Carlin, a regular shopper at Asda, of Delaware Road, Shoebury, didn’t mind the traveller presence.
She said: “A vast majority of them are very clean, and as long as they’re being tidy, it doesn’t affect me.
“Recently I’ve been watching the TV show, Big Fat Gypsy Wedding, so I’ve seen both sides and I have a better understanding of their culture.”
Another shopper, Ann Streete, 50, from Ashingdon, believes there should be more places designated for travellers to stay.
She said: “A lot of people are concerned about them leaving a mess behind, which other people have to pay to clear up, but true travellers would take it with them.”
A spokesperson from Asda said: “The store is operating as normal, and we are talking to the police to ensure our car park is fully available to customers.”
One of the travellers says the group will be leaving soon and refused to comment further.
