Borough’s soaring recycling rates praised
10:30pm Friday 6th September 2013 in News
THE success of recycling across the borough is due to be discussed by councillors today.
It follows targeted campaigns by Basildon Council to boost recycling. In the last year, the council has targeted four areas – each with 1,000 homes – driving up awareness and education.
Each area has seen more than an 8 per cent increase in recycling, with one reaching a near 14 per cent boost.
Overall, the recycling rate in the borough has soared from 38 per cent in 2009/10 to nearly 54 per cent.
John Dornan, councillor responsible for environment, said: “The council has made great strides, from under 40 per cent in 2009 to well over 50 per cent and I would like to thank residents for helping to make this happen.
“This is down to a number of initiatives and the excellent service the team provides.
“But we want to keep working hard and ensure residents are recycling all they can.”
Over the next year, the council will focus on educating residents who place the wrong items into recycling bags.
