THOUSANDS of runners and York landmarks will be shown across national television when highlights from the city’s first-ever marathon are shown on Channel 4.

The event is to be televised after marathon sponsors Plusnet announced a deal with production company Dream Team television.

Plusnet is to fund a 50-minute highlights package to be shown a week after the event, with coverage fronted by former Olympic decathlete Dean Macey, London Olympics presenter Rob Walker and football presenter Charlie Webster.

The programme will be shown on Sunday, November 3, at 7am, and producers said the race’s flat route promises impressive performances as well as a scenic background.

Lead presenter Rob Walker said: “York is a beautiful city and with the marathon course being flat, we’re looking to see some great times clocked on the day.

“However, what makes this sporting event so unique is the focus on involving members of the general public, to raise money for charities close to their heart.”

The cameras will follow the 6,500 runners passing York landmarks including the Minster, Bettys, Monk Bar, and as they head out of the city and around villages in the Vale of York.

Rob said: “Capturing stories of the individual runners within this splendid backdrop is the recipe for a great TV programme.”

The marathon is organised by For All Events, the company behind the York 10k which was set up as part of charity fundraiser Jane Tomlinson’s legacy.

Her widower, Mike, said he had found the support shown for the first Yorkshire Marathon was phenomenal.

He said: “To have the event showcased on television in its very first year will raise the profile of the event further still, helping us to cement the marathon’s growing reputation as one of the UK’s flagship events.”

The programme will also be shown later in the autumn on BT Sport, Sky Sports, British Eurosport and some overseas sports channels.
