Credit card thieves spend £2k on cigs
THIEVES spent nearly £2,000 on cigarettes in just 90 minutes after stealing a woman’s credit card in a car park con.
She was approached by a man who asked her for help with reading a map, but, when she was distracted, his accomplice jumped into her car and stole her credit card from her purse.
The 52-year-old, who did not want to be named, said: “I only realised what had happened when I returned home and my husband, who was checking our online bank account, asked me if I spent £2,000 today. I said:‘Of course not’.
“Initially, I thought I must have left my credit card in the reader at the supermarket check-out, but when the staff checked the CCTV they saw I hadtaken mycard with me.
“That’s when I remembered the man with the map–it was just so insignificant. I was just in shock.”
Essex Police are warningpeople to be vigilant after a string of similar incidents in the area.
The woman said: “It was just so clever. The man, who was foreign, told me he was trying to get to Dover.
“He spread the map on his car so that I had my back to my own car, which is when his accomplice rifled through my bag and took my card. They were really clever.
Because they did not take my purse,Idid not realise anything had happened.”
The victim said: “I am really angry about this and want to warn other people.I keep looking around when I go out."
