Four decades of crossing roads
6:00am Wednesday 23rd October 2013 in News
A LOLLIPOP lady has crossed off 40 years keeping children safe outside school.
Maureen West, 77, of Mapleford Sweep, has been pounding the pavement on Clay Hill Road, Basildon, since 1973.
The great grandmother has been there so long she has seen school pupils return with their own children to cross the street to Cherry Tree Primary School.
Pupils and parents took Mrs West into the playground to say a big thank you for her dedication.
Mrs West said: “I just love it so much. It gets me out and makes me get up in the mornings. You get to meet all sorts of people.
The children keep me young and have little chats with me – lots of them have come up to me to say happy anniversary.”
The school congratulated Mrs West with some flowers, a bottle of champagne and a gift.
She added: “I wanted to get to 40 years and then I thought if I can do another year it will be lovely, and if I could do another two years that would be even better.
I will see how it goes.”
