Update: Woman dies after being hit by train near Southend East
A WOMAN has died after being hit by a train at a crossing in Southend.
Trains were suspended between Southend Central and Shoeburyness following the incident - which took place just after 9.30am.
She was pronounced dead at the scene, on the track between Southend East and Thorpe Bay.
Train services began again at 1.20pm, but minor delays were expected to occur.
Woodgrange Close and Pilgrims Close, on either side of a crossing were closed off by police investigating the incident.
The train was held in place at the scene for more than two hours.
A spokesman for c2c said while services had been suspended: “We apologise to customers delayed after a fatality near Southend East station this morning.
"Trains are currently suspended between Shoeburyness and Southend Central, with some delays to the rest of the route, and we are working with British Transport Police to restore a full service as soon as possible.
"c2c tickets are being accepted by local bus services between Shoeburyness and Southend. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this incident.”
Evening services are expected to be unaffected by the incident.
