A SOUTHEND B&B has been crowned the best in Essex.
Hamiltons Boutique Hotel, in Royal Terrace, beat two other finalists for the Essex Tourism Award, which was presented at a ceremony in Chelmsford.
John Slowley, 66, has owned the business for seven years, and says he was very pleased with the result.
He said: “It was a great surprise – we didn’t expect to win it, because there was quite a lot of competition.
“I think the judges were impressed with it being a family business, and the care we put into making sure our guests are looked after.”
John’s daughter, Rachel Ural, entered the hotel in the competition earlier in the year and had judges assess the building and interview staff at the end of September.
John said: “Rachel’s like a manager. When I’m not there, she’s in charge, especially with the computer and technology side of things.
“My grand-daughters also help out when we’re really busy.”
John also praised staff member Jane Chandler, who has worked at the hotel for three years.
He said: “Jane is key to the running of the hotel – she cooks, cleans and sorts the guests out. She’s very good with the guests.”
