UPDATE: Chinese lantern causes train delays after coming into contact with overhead wires at Southend East
THERE were delays of up to 30 minutes on trains between Shoeburyness and Southend Central this evening after a Chinese lantern was caught in wires.
A Network Rail spokesman said: "Overhead wire problems are causing disruption at Southend East.
"Because of this, there are delays of up to 30 minutes between Shoeburyness and Southend Central.
"These delays will continue until further notice."
A spokesman for train operator c2c said at 10pm: "We do think it's a Chinese lantern at this stage. "The issue is that it has got tangled in the overhead power lines, which can damage the train's pantograph (the part that collects power from the wires); this can cause damage to the train and potentially damage the power lines.
"Services are running in both directions on one line at the moment; this is causing some minor delays while the trains pass each other.
"We apologise to all passengers affected."
Firefighters were not needed at the scene.
Services began returning to normal from 10.20pm.
