A MUM facing jail for going on the run with her son has vowed to fight to get him back.

Michelle Kelly, 28, of Mellow Purgess Close, Laindon, fled to Scotland with one-year-old Jaden after Essex Social Services secured an order to take him into care.

Basildon Magistrates’ Court heard the youngster had been under close supervision since he was born in August 2012 because of concerns about his parents’ previous drug use.

After a social worker spotted photographs on Facebook of Kelly, Jaden and his dad Junior Jeffrey enjoying a day out at the London Eye, the mum was ordered to a care hearing at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court.

Jeffrey was not meant to have unsupervised contact because of his criminal past, but Kelly and her family insist he turned up unannounced after finding out where they were.

Despite a judgment stating her care of the youngster was “more than satisfactory”

and he was in no immediate danger, it was decided Jaden should be taken into foster care.

Kelly was due to hand Jaden over to Essex Social Services, at the Willowbrook Family Centre, in Church Road, Basildon, on August 16, but instead went on the run to Edinburgh.

Mark Pearson, mitigating for Kelly, said: “This is an unusual and very sad case.

“Kelly was understandably in a state of shock.

“She didn’t know what to do. She was a mum who was about to lose her son.

“She admits emotion took over and she just couldn’t give her child up.

“She couldn’t bring herself to plead guilty because she felt she had done nothing wrong.

“She has the support of her family, but can’t see any future until she knows what is happening with her son.

“She’s determined and will never give up.”

Kelly was due to stand trial on Friday, but admitted one count of keeping a child away from the responsible person at the last minute.

She was discovered in Edinburgh and arrested after six days on the run.

Jaden was taken into care and has been in four foster homes in the past ten weeks.

Magistrates ordered a Probation Service report to be carried out before Kelly is sentenced on November 22.

Speaking after the hearing, she said: “I’m not giving up.

“In my opinion social services broke the law by stealing my baby from me.

“This is all down to one day at the London Eye.”
