Sandwich shop Subway moving into Rayleigh

Echo: Sandwich shop Subway moving into Rayleigh Sandwich shop Subway moving into Rayleigh

FAST-FOOD giant Subway is moving into Rayleigh High Street.

The popular sandwich chain is taking over a vacant shop opposite the town clock.

However, the plans haven’t been warmly received.

Carl Watson, president of the chamber of the town’s chamber of trade, said: “If that’s where it’s going, then it’s a real shame. It’s a prime location being turned into another catering facility.

“Of course competition is good for business, but it’s detrimental to the town to have another store from the service industry.

“I have concerns there’s very little retail choice coming into the town. We have a great night-time economy here that is going from strength to strength, but we need more for the day time.

“You just have to look in the High Street and see how many shops have closed in the past year.”

No different from 60 to 65 years ago. I used to work in Rayleigh High St in a food retail store and the High St was known as 'belly & telly'. Nearly every other outlet was either a food or television retailer.

Dreadful muck all measured and weighed to the nth degree.

Went in one once and vowed never to return.

Wholly unecessary in Rayleigh too given how well the town is served for food outlets of all kind.

If its unnecessary it will fail.

Food outlets seem to be the only brave ones, lets face it rents/rates etc have helped to kill off other options, its tough out there.

It might be a bit embarrassing when Subway won't be too welcome at the Chamber of Trade meetings by the sounds of it...Whooops.

How about welcoming a new buisness thats brave enough to open up on a High Street.....how about an untidy looking Phone unlocking shop selling Goudy China made phone covers and other assorted cheapo items.

We'd rather have a thousand of these than one Bar Blanco. It's OK by me. All I have to do is walk round the corner. Great stuff!

Hear hear! And don't I get to hear them at 3am fighting and brawling, women screaming like fishwives and the men gobbing off at the tops of their voices.

Bar Blanco is the worst offender. Such obnoxious cretins go in there. One of them jumped in front of my car on Saturday night. Should have run him over really.

Really...?..its much clearer now, I couldn't understand why the chamber of commerce sounded a bit negative regarding this place opening.

Subway is run as a franchise. I believe the current operator of the Baz (restaurant) is the third victim. Maybe the people of Rayleigh will prove more discerning consumers of this synthetic American cr*p.

Although Subway sandwiches are not my cup of tea, surely its better to have a vacant space used , where it will create jobs than an empty space sitting there.

Have to laugh at ol Kims comments. You truly hate Blancco dont you. A little harsh to call everyone who goes there a cretin tho dont you think ?. Stereotypical busy body springs to mind..........

A bit like the cretin who draped a union flag upside down from their balcony above Blanco's 2 years ago, you want to speak as you do, learn here what you do.

It will probably be the same as the Subway in Southend which is the only food place that stays open until 4am at the weekends. They operate a last resort policy to round up all the drunks at the end of the night. To quote Obi-Wan "You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy".
