Backlash after schools installs CCTV in pupils toilets

A HEADTEACHER has come under fire for deciding to install CCTV cameras in his secondary school’s toilets.

Pupils and parents are said to be up in arms over Neil Houchen’s decision to put the cameras in boys’ and girls’ toilets at the Eastwood Academy.

The move forms part of a security crackdown on vandals and bullies, but parents have labelled it a “disgusting” invasion of a private space used by teenagers at a sensitive time of their life.

One parent, who asked not to be named, said: “There seems to be some uproar from the students at Eastwood Academy as the school has installed cameras in the boys and girls toilets.

“It really is quite disgusting.”

The school, in Rayleigh Road, Eastwood, has installed two cameras after graffiti was scrawled in toilets and sinks were filled with toilet paper.

Mr Houchen stressed vandalism was rare, but said his bid to tighten security was necessary as the school wanted to eradicate any misconduct.

He said: “CCTV cameras have been installed in the girls’ and boys’ toilets. I would like to stress that these cameras face the washbasins and do not face the cubicles.

“The purpose of these cameras is to aid detection of acts of vandalism and/or bullying, which pupils have reported as occurring on an ad hoc basis.

“I see it as my duty to make all areas of the academy site as safe and secure as possible, including toilets.

“I would like to stress these acts are extremely rare, but I am keen that the opportunity for such feckless misconduct is eradicated.”

The headteacher, who took over the school three years ago, denied any pupils had complained to him about the cameras and said those with concerns could air them at the next school council meeting.

The school has built a £50,000 staff gym and cafe, expanded its canteen and revamped its reception in the past year. It is updating its security system for the first time in a decade.

It has already replaced 15 existing cameras and is installing eight more in previously uncovered areas, including a bike shed that suffered a recent theft, the main playground at the centre of the site and in all its computer rooms.

All the main doors and gates in the school have been fitted with with electronic locks, which can be accessed using an electronic key card.

Mr Houchen intends to make all doors, including those to classrooms and cupboards, accessible using cards with various levels of authorisation.

The Echo revealed Futures Community College, in Southchurch Boulevard, had one camera for every 13 pupils in September last year.

graffiti and putting tissue down the sink and bogs is a years old thing, wrong..yes, but might make things worse seeing as the whole are won't be covered by CCTV, close the toilets and put porta potties(Builders toilets) in, single plastic cubicles in the outside areas, they will soon want their nice toilets back.

One has to ask if we are hearing the real reasons for installing cameras in the toilets. To spend a substantial amount on these for such minimal offences does seem like a waste of public money. Perhaps he could persuade some of the staff out there new cafe and gym to supervise these areas instead.

So by the sounds of it theres a bulling problem at this school then, surely bullys get expelled, they must know who they are. (do they still expel bad pupils.?), agree get out of the Gym and cafe and supervise areas, and the walking around will replace the need for a 50grand Gym.

Can't honestly see what the problem is here?

The cameras aren't facing the cubicles so they will remain "private". What would pupils/students do in/around the wash basin area that would be wrong to catch on CCTV?

I agree that school toilets have traditionslly been used as secluded areas in which to perform some casual vandalism and/or bullying but that doesn't mean it's a practice that should continue.

Perhaps if parents taught their kids how to behave better they wouldn't have to worry about their little darlings getting caught doing things they shouldn't ;-)

I don't see how this will cause a lot more problems for the school? It it does, it will only prove the headmaster has done the right thing by installing more CCTV. The headmaster should be thanked for taking more action with CCTV then vandalism and bullying is recorded and then expell the culprits. CCTV will never stop shoplifting as it is a camera, and cameras can't arrest or catch the thief. They do however record the crime, giving the people who can arrest or deal with the incident.

For all those people who have said why are the school "filming boys and girls in the toilets".....and "who is watching it".....I'm sure that from what you are insinuating, if they really wanted to film boys and girls in the toilets, they wouldn't have told the local paper.

are the children naked when using the toilets? do they have s3x in the toilets? is the cctv behind the door of each cubicle facing the children? are the cameras filming the boys using the urinal? the answer is 'no' to all of these, It clearly states that the wash basins can only be seen by the cameras. Or maybe the school should start charging more for each family when they have to clear up the mess, or better still give the individual families the bill to pay it themselves.

50k gym and cafe, where has that come from. Some gym equipment in an unused room tha the students use in lesson time and staff use before and after school, hardly 50k worth! And a cafe?!!?? You mean a staff room that this school has not had for some time!
If you are a teacher from the school then please be aware its "anon" not "anom"
No a parent of a student. However, a good comment to pass to echo as they generated the name. No full stop at end of your sentence?
I wouldn't take any lectures from LastLaugh on spelling, literacy or grammar - he's as mad as a box frogs.

Furthermore, I doubt he's ever been in a school - (a cultural thing I believe)

Anom - Could be short for anomaly eh?

Back to topic - they don't like cameras? Simple: behave.

So by the sounds of it theres a bulling problem at this school then, surely bullys get expelled, they must know who they are. (do they still expel bad pupils.?), agree get out of the Gym and cafe and supervise areas, and the walking around will replace the need for a 50grand Gym.
Eastwood is of course an Academy and only answerable to Gove. It does expel a lot of pupils and has been criticised by Ofsted for not doing enough for its vulnerable pupils who they do not support, merely throw out.

Surely it's only the kids who have something to hide that have an issue anyway?
Never mind Lastlaugh, it's the resident leftie nutjob. Has nothing better to do than rip others' arguments to shreds. You will find that a lot on here. This lot hate being wrong which is bad really as they are wrong most of the time - with a few exceptions.

Nowadays I rarely revisit a post to read the replies. They are so predictable.

No lecture Rochford booby..a simple observation which the poster acknowledged was correct and referred me to the echo...what is worrying is people had to take lectures on law from you while you, in the company of an "old sweat" (Policeman) were calling crimes by different names for reasons you have yet to explain! I don't doubt I believe that you can't explain!

But you on the other hand doubt something and then advise you have a belief in the thing you doubt...how can you possibly have a belief in something that is doubtful?

Oh yes I forgot, you are an "old sweat" nothing is ever what it seems..anomaly eh? Right?

Kim please...you must get over your obsession with political ideology...I don't have one being apolitical..all as narcissistic as the next.. individually, and merely three slightly different heads of the same body! Unless that is considered an ideology...I'm sure the resident "old sweat" will plod along to advise me of that shortly..

From talking to some of the students there is a camera above the urinal which is a dome type camera which would encompass the urinals as well as the sinks. What is wrong with using anti-graffiti paint and if no-one is monitoring the live footage what's the point?
The pupils had a low opinion of this head teacher, but this has brought him to an all time low and being ridiculed by the students.
