MORE dogs than ever before are being rescued by kennels.

Acres Way Kennels, in Thundersley, is having unprecedented numbers of dogs brought to them after being dumped on the streets of South Essex.

The kennels, also a registered charity, is currently trying to find homes for 40 dogs, and is running out of space.

Many are in need of operations, but with such demand on its services, the kennel can’t afford the treatments, which can cost hundreds of pounds.

Susan Clarkson, manager at the kennels, in Great Burches Road, Thundersley, has seen her costs rise dramatically over 20 years, and now spends more than £250,000 a year trying to take care of abandoned dogs.

She said: “It’s worse than previous years. We have been inundated with dogs.

"When I started this 20 years ago we had about four dogs needing homes, now we have 40.

“People are finding dogs are injured in the area and we have a lot of dogs that come in with broken legs because people can’t afford the vet bills.”

Numbers of rescue dogs at the kennels have doubled since last year. Dogs are coming from Basildon, Southend, Rochford and Castle Point.

Ms Clarkson added: “It has been busy since September.

“I am putting it down to the financial climate. It’s idyllic to have a family and a dog, but with humans nowadays the animals are not fitting in like they used to. When it’s raining and cold, people don’t want to take their dog for a walk.”

Ms Clarkson also urged people to think twice about buying pets from small adds.

She said: “People are getting these dogs from places like Gumtree and don’t think twice.

“They should get them from a reputable place.”
