MOTORISTS could be stuck in jams as the A127 is closed next week for resurfacing.
The road will close at night from Monday and will not return to normal until January 28.
The works will be carried out from 9pm until 5am on weekdays in an effort to minimise disruption.
But it is likely to have a knock-on effect on any motorists trying to get about in the evening or driving into work the following morning.
Contractors will move in to repair damaged areas between the A1245 and the A132 on the London-bound lane and taking in the junction with Pound Lane, near to Alton garden centre.
A spokesman for Essex Highways said: “Following a survey, it was found the section of the road surface is in a poor condition.
“In the light of this, we will be carrying out resurfacing works to a section of the highway, weather permitting.
These works will require a road closure, so a signed diversion will be in place.
The works will also commence at 9pm to minimise any potential disruption.
“Advanced warning signs are currently on-site and a letter drop has also taken place to notify residents.”
The latest roadworks will come as a worry for long-suffering motorists who had to contend with the £63million Sadlers Farm roadworks, which overran the deadline by nearly a year.
Morning disruption is likely to cause tailbacks into Southend, but Southend Council urged motorists to be patient.
A council spokesman said: “We urge motorists to be patient, consider other road users and drive carefully while the essential work is carried out.”
