Councillors clash over third road proposal

Echo: Councillor Phil Anderson is staunchly against the plans Councillor Phil Anderson is staunchly against the plans

TWO senior tory politicians have clashed over the possibility of building a controversial third road linking Canvey and Corringham.

Phil Anderson, leader of the Conservative party at Thurrock Council and Ray Howard, County Councillor and Canvey stalwart, faced off over the possibility of a third road leading from the island to Corringham.

Mr Anderson, ward councillor for Stanford East and Corringham Town, is staunchly against the proposal.

The plans, if passed, could see a road built to link Northwick Road, Canvey, to Manor Way, Corringham.

He said the additional traffic that would bring to the town, and Manor Way in particular, would put more pressure on the road.

Lorries bound for the £1.6 billion DP World London Gateway superport at Stanford-le-Hope and the new Thames Oil Port in Coryton will also be using the existing Corringham road.

Mr Anderson said: “As you can imagine, there is a fair degree of concern locally that to add this traffic on top of the additional vehicles from DP World and the potential new Thames Oil Port development would have a severe impact on quality of life in Corringham and Stanford and potentially lead to gridlock at junctions which have not been designed to take Canvey traffic.”

However, Mr Howard claims recent developments at DP World shows it is the right time to improve links between Thurrock and Canvey.

He said: “I am disappointed to hear the leader of the conservative party in Thurrock has a different view as I believe the proposal has benefits to both areas.

“Not everyone will use the road if it is built so I don’t know if it would be as busy as suggested but I would be happy to meet with the Thurrock Conservatives to share views.”

Mr Anderson said Homesteads councillor James Halden will raise a motion at the full council meeting this Wednesday asking the Labour-run authority to not support the road proposal.

Mr Halden added: “I have grown up in Stanford and I have seen our community do its fair share in terms of hosting national infrastructure; from ports to major roads. We have enough going on in Thurrock.”

The roads plan was presented to Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin by Castle Point MP Rebecca Harris in December with the Department for Transport promising to help Castle Point Council look into funding options for the project.

The only current routes off the island are Canvey Way and Ferry Road, Benfleet.

Senior Tory Politicians? Don't make me laugh.

Hardly prominent cabinet members are they. Never heard of one of them....

If the third road off Canvey had already been there before the new Port was ever thought about , would the Port have been refused planning permission due to traffic levels? The answer is clearly no, so what is the difference?

what congestion will it make, canvey will be coming onto the manorway which has been reinforced to deal with the port traffic and it will be used a through road to the a13, that is all. It does open both towns up to more people visiting which has its bad and good points but it makes sense to have it.

These objection Corringham put up years ago when this road was first preposed when there were signs all along the Manorway "No to road to Canvey". No surprise then that the Corringham residents and Councillors are against it. NIMBY rules as usual.

The simple truth is Cllr Anderson is up for election this year. He has to stir up residents on a non issue to try and gain some electoral support. Lots of froth and hot air from this political pygmy.

They have two roads off, surely that will suffice, they only busy during rush hours, let them make do with what they already have, less in this case is more.

How odd lately that as soon as something new or different is announced, out come the NIMBYs. No Hungry Horse in Hadleigh - No to new builds in many places in the Borough - no third road for Canvey people.
Phil Anderson is certainly not a senior Tory politician but I suppose its one way of getting his face shown in a local paper. 'Lets object to a third road for the long suffering Canvey people'. Where has this man been for the past number of months whilst the A13 junction has been improved to take a lot more traffic due to the new port, does he not know what is going on? Any extra traffic from Canvey Island can easily be handled by the new access routes on the A13 and majority of it will go west off to the Motorways.
Manor Way is a dual carriageway and for the majority of its length there is very little housing alongside it, so it is minimal disruption to the people of Thurrock and any that arises can easily be blocked by appropriate fencing as indeed happens along major motorways now.
Ed Woods summed it up and it always the same with NIMBYs. I often wonder what these introspective individuals would do if the boot was on the other foot, probably kick a ball!!

getting off canvey is a nightmare and not jusr at rush hour a third road would be great but to be honest the Nimbys in Corringham will probably win! lets pressure the council to build a through road to benfleet that doesn't go through the the roundabout maybe through the golf course.
