CHALKWELL Lifeguards have been given four new life jackets by a shipping firm to keep them safe.

The jackets will be used by the rescue boat crew, which is manned by volunteers who have already logged more than 3,000 hours of service in 2014 due to the high tides and rough seas caused by stormy weather.

Shipping company Atlantic Pacific became aware of the work Chalkwell Lifeguards do and approached the volunteers to see how they could help.

Dan Remfry, a lifeguard in Benfleet, volunteers with the Chalkwell crew and thanked Atlantic Pacific for their generosity.

He said: “It will make a huge difference to us. We rely on public donations to keep us going.

“The ones we have been using are quite old now, so these will really help the rescue boat crew.

“Atlantic Pacific come down to the beach quite a lot in the summer to see the work we do and asked how they could help us out. It’s really good of them.”
