DETECTIVES are appealing for information following a burglary in Benfleet which has left a woman shocked and upset.

The break-in happened when a thief entered through an unlocked back door of a house on New Road, near to its junction with Templewood Road, in the early hours of Sunday and stole mobile telephones, jewellery, personal documents and a safe.

Investigating Officer, Dc Christian Forbes, said: "Those out walking their dog, out for a jog, driving to work or returning home from a night shift before 8am are all potential witnesses. If they saw a man looking suspicious or out of place in this area, then we need to hear from them.”

Officers take this opportunity to once again remind homeowners of the need to secure their homes by closing and locking windows and doors whether they are inside or outside their property.

Dc Forbes added: "The female owner is upset that she has fallen foul of a burglar and now understands why we urge people to lock their doors.”

A forensic examination of the house has been completed as have house-to-house enquiries.

Anyone with information in connection with this burglary is asked to contact detectives at Southend police station on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
