Southend airshow cancelled

Echo: Airshow organisers John Delaney and Thomas Curtis Airshow organisers John Delaney and Thomas Curtis

THE Southend Airshow & Military Festival has been postponed until 2015.

A funding shortfall has lead organisers to postpone this year's inaugural event.

They say they have been unable to raise the final £35,000 required to secure the show.

John Delaney and Thomas Curtis received final approval from Southend Council  to run the airshow in July.

The pair stepped in after Southend Council said it could no longer afford to run the popular annual event.

In less than a year the team raised £185,000 sourced from sponsors including Headline Toomey Motor Group.

Thomas Curtis said: “Though it's undoubtedly a sad day for myself and the team, postponing the event to 2015 does not remove the achievements we have made this year.

"From the creation of Southend Airshow CIC, ‘Gibson’ the Airshow Bear and raising an amazing £185,000 in just nine months. This is combined with the massive success we have found found on Facebook, where we have in excess of 23,000 supporters making us one of the largest, if not the largest Airshow Facebook page in the country.”

Sad to hear that, hopefully the extra time will enable the shortfall to be made up, there will be that will be happy at the news but best ignore them as they only ever look at Southend in a negative way and would only moan, nleat and winge that Southend was too busy with the very thing the town thrives on tourists.

Good luck for next year chaps.

Just to point out a fact that the lollipops being withdrawn are those under the control of Essex County Council.

Unless SBC have announced changes and I have not seen the story relating to any such announcement, if such an announcement relating to the Southend controlled lollipop crossing patrols has been made then I apologise for incorrectly correcting you.

However if no such announcement has been made then you might want ot correct your statement.

So who would pay for all the services if we didnt pay our tax? Silly idea!

Equally, unless I am mistaken both the lollipop people issue and also the lights switching off issue you mention are Essex County Council and not Southend Council.

I am also not sure how bullying lollipop people into finding sponsorship kills children? The two actions do not seem to be connected.

Which website doesnt work? Again I am fairly certain that there are no issues with Southend website.

Equally how does councillors speaking out fund the shortfall? Surely they need to do more than speak.

Leighman - if only it were that simple. When the call came earlier in the year, I was only too glad to put my hand in my pocket and donate (and a lot more than £1.50)

I think the work that these gents have done is nothing short of spectacular and I am very disheartened that as a community, they have not been supported more. As you say, 23,000 Facebook likes - my guess (and it is only a guess) is that at least 20,000 of them haven't donated... like many things, it's easy to say, but when it comes to the crunch and putting a few quid in then people run a mile...a sad, tragic reality really.

However, once again, I applaud the efforts of John & Thomas and hope that 2015 does see the airshow return and that these 2 gents get just recognition for their stellar efforts.

the problem was the money donated of pledged I would think it would be strange for companies to hand over large sums of money without some kind of caveat, there has many a time been things like this that have been nothing more than a scam, Obviously this is not the case , anybody that has donated will have to account for funds , so it would be difficult to advance next years advertising budget this year so I would suspect that they are pledges and the caveats would be on the proviso of it actully going ahead, this would lead for easier accounting

Its not glory and they are not killing machines. I think you will find that no aircraft or any other vehicle (air or ground) is in an unloaded or unarmed state. without loaded ammunition or armaments it is no a (killing machine)

Save the Airshow says...

We were very disappointed to have to postpone the Airshow plans till 2015 however the decision was made due to sound principles after the team had worked so hard for over a year to try & save the Airshow. The reality is it was July when we got the ok from Southend Council to proceed with our plans so we were on a very tight deadline to get everything in place within 6 months starting from scratch.

Everyone in the team is very proud of what we have achieved to date including the creation of the not for profit CIC Company, our special relationship with Help For Heroes who have provided the Internet donation platform, Stow Maries WWI Airfield which gave us access to a grass runway & WWI planes, Essex Military Support Association who are running the largest Armed Forces Day Event in Essex, The creation of "Gibson" our Airshow Bear Mascot with the help of Teddy Station plus the support from Southend Airport and all our Sponsors with special mention to Toomey Motor Group who stepped forward as headline sponsor.

Unfortunately on the planned 2014 weekend there is a huge special event taking place in Switzerland which a large number of RAF assets will be attending so that means we failed in our RAF bid to get the Red Arrows, Typhoon and several other assets such as the Tornado & Lancaster etc so this was also a factor in our postponement decision however ultimately it was the fact we were still £35,000 short in fundraising overall.

The real positive from all this is that we have a new 9 month window to raise the remaining funds so we can put on a show worthy of the history of this iconic event which was the longest running FREE event in the World and larger that the British Formula 1 Grand Prix and we want to put on a show that is exciting, fresh & vibrant.

Regarding funds
Most of the £185,000 is via trade/catering agreements based on the show going ahead and this agreement will carry over to 2015 so although most of the funds are not in our bank currently the agreements & the contracts remain in place (this is the morally correct way to do business & highlights our integrity with traders etc) and when the 2015 deadlines are reached the funds will then be available to us to use to finance the event. All personal donations are being rolled over to the 2015 event and will be used towards putting on the event and full accounting procedures will be ensured by our accountancy support sponsor Goldwyn's.

Bottom line is, sometimes you have to take a step back to move two steps forward and we are confident our plan is solid re bringing back a spectacular & iconic Airshow to Southend and we are delighted all our supporters & sponsors are still 100% with us for the revised 2015 plan. We need more local businesses to get involved to help and fund the event but with an extra 9 months now available this is achievable and we hope other local companies will see the benefit of supporting the biggest free event in Essex with over 400,000 visitors over the two day weekend.

Finally sincere thanks to everyone who has supported our efforts from our sponsors & supporters to Facebook followers together we will bring the airshow back to Southend. Many Thanks

The Council really shown little appetite for putting Southend on the map when it comes to major events. The Airshow was just one event that was axed. We do remember fondly the 2nd best illuminations in the country, an Essex County Cricket Festival, A Town Show, a thriving Bandstand on The Cliffs which hosted part of The Southend Jazz Festival and so forth.

comedy would work like this.

star wars... episode 70.

For many years the taxpayer alliance and the evil Tory empire where high above the planet Proletariat in the ukiprian system constructing the dreaded 'DEBT STAR'

In the outer reaches of the fiscal quadrant the workers federation are fighting on, despite lacking in food, supplies and ships. The pilots continue to defend the federal outpost 'food banks' despite the pressures of 'zero hours' flying contracts.

The imperial 'daily mail' propaganda machine continue to keep the support the empires desired public view, that the food bank outposts are linked to terrorist cells.

Without the support of the 'labour' battle fleet which has lost navigational control in the neocon sector, following the empires coup to power. the workers federation seem lost against hopeless struggle.

Many Thanks
Question John - Why did you not take up the offer we made to you at Armed Forces Day Southend in June 2013, on the seafront and in previous conversations for June 2014? We love and support the Southend Air Festival and, would have been pleased to hand you the 'Air' element of our Armed Forces Day Southend - Land, Sea & Air.

Every third year of Armed Forces Day Southend, we plan to celebrate the RAF and flight with an Air Festival in June, with a smaller air presence when 'Land' and 'Sea' are celebrated for the Army and Navy respectively. Southend Borough Council cannot afford an annual air show any longer. The whole concept of a privately run air show takes time to build up and, most importantly, must contain several other concepts taken from the private sector. We are already speaking with National and International companies, who are eager to consider sponsorship for an Armed Force Day Southend Air Festival in June 2015.

Armed Forces Aid (Intl) Ltd, a not for profit organisation presently under application for full charitable status with the Charity Commission, is responsible for creating and organising Armed Forces Day Southend on Sea annually. Through this Echo page, we now publically offer the Directors of Southend Airshow CIC, the 'Air Festival' remit of Armed Forces Day Southend 2015, subject to an agreed contract between parties. If we hear nothing by Sunday midnight 23 March 2014, the offer will be withdrawn and your decision respected and understood.

You have done tremendously well so far, lets make this work for the common good of the Southend Community. We can be contacted by;
