A PIONEERING scheme has been launched in Benfleet to help children who get a rare condition after brain tumour surgery.

The Danny Green Fund and Benfleet Physiotherapy, in Rayleigh Road, Thundersley, are helping provide specialist treatment for children with posterior fossa syndrome.

The rare condition, which is found after a brain tumour has been surgically removed from the brain stem, leads to poor balance, loss of speech, and weakness on one side of the body.

Now, youngsters will be able to get one-on-one physiotherapy and hydrotherapy at the Thundersley centre to aid their recovery .

The company has volunteered its expertise and chipped in £1,000 a year to help fund the sessions.

Benfleet Physiotherapy owner Nigel Kimpton said: “We’ve been running our clinic for 25 years and we’ve grown to such an extent we can now offer help to children.

“We are just so impressed by what the charity does for children with posterior fossa syndrome so we wanted to offer our expertise.

“We hope this will be really beneficial to the community. We are treating a three-year-old girl who hasn’t been able to walk before, but three weeks ago, she took her first steps.

“It’s extremely rewarding to see the joy of a family when we can help give them some normality so we are happy to help.”

The Danny Green Fund was set up by the family of 11-year-old Canvey lad Danny, who he lost an eight-month battle with brain and spinal cancer in July 2012.

He suffered the effects of posterior fossa syndrome, and was unable to lift his head or walk.

Now his family give up their time to provide information about the condition and support to others who have it.

Danny’smum, Lisa Green, said: “The fund is looking forward to working with Nigel and his team of physiotherapists who provide a friendly and professional service.

“Specialist input is essential in helping children who are suffering from the syndrome to maximise their potential and build upon the initial recovery they have made.

“Together, we are going to maximise each child’s potential and restore lost skills.”
