Echo: Schoolboy has head shaved for charity Schoolboy has head shaved for charity

A SELFLESS schoolboy has had his head shaved to raise money for a charity set up in memoryof his best friend, who died after suffering a brain tumour.

Alfie Wellington, 12, of Point Road, Canvey was devastated by the death of 11-year-old Danny Green in July 2012 of brain and spinal cancer.

The Leigh Beck Primary School pupils had been inseparable since they started nursery together.

Determined to do something in Danny’s honour, Alfie decided to part company with a whole year’s growth of hair to raise cash for the Danny Green Fund.

Alfie’s mum, Kim Wellington, said: “They’d known each other since they were babies. They went to nursery and primary school together and were really good friends. He took it really badly when Danny died, as they were so close.

“He’s been growing his hair since last summer. Rather than growing down, it had been growing outwards, so I’m glad he’s had it cut.

“It’s such a lovely thing for him to do. I’m extremely proud of him. At first, he thought he would get £50 or so, but we told him to aim higher, and so far he’s raised £430.”

The Danny Green Fund was set up by Danny’s family to help young sufferers of the condition he had, posterior fossa syndrome.

It is a rare condition which can occur after a brain tumour is surgically removed from the brain stem, causing loss of speech and the ability to swallow, weakness and poor balance.

It leaves some children, as was the case with Danny, unable to hold up their heads, or walk.

Danny’s mum, Lisa Green said: “It’s such a great thing to do – especially for a young boy of 12. To do this in his friend’s memory is amazing.

“Alfie and Danny were very close and were often referred to as Dick and Dom at nursery, as they were always together.”
