A SCHOOL is holding meetings with parents about whether it should become an academy.

Bosses at Woodlands School, in Woodlands Approach, Basildon, have launched a consultation and are considering teaming up with the Appleton School, in Benfleet, which would sponsor them.

The school already has close links with Appleton after headteacher Karen Kerridge was placed as executive headteacher to oversee Woodlands.

Staff have invited parents to discuss the possibility at two meetings this week.

Stephen Metcalfe, MP for South Basildon and East Thurrock, said parents would welcome the move.

He said: “I think improvements have been rapid under the guidance of Karen.

“She’s certainly got to grips with the school very quickly and its move into the newschool building has given it a fresh start.

“I think this consultation is another step about turning it back into the excellent school it was just two years ago.

“An academy status would give it all the support it needs in terms of other schools that are doing well.”

Woodlands was put into special measures and rated inadequate last year by Ofsted inspectors.

Inspectors said headteacher Andy White had presented the school in a positive light when “nothing was further from the truth”. He resigned following the inspection.

Ofsted raised concerns about declining standards and inadequate progress.

A follow-up report in February found things were improving and action was being taken.

Themeetings for parents will be held at 3.45pm and 7pm on Tuesday, April 29.
