OPERA buffs are in for a treat when Mozart’s world-famous opera Così Fan Tutte comes to the Royal Pavilion on Southend Pier next month.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s masterpiece about love, loyalty and the battle of the sexes will be performed on the landmark pier on Saturday, June 21.

The drama and its incredible music is set to transport the audience to the epicentre of intrigue, cunning and questionable morals – the City of London!

Opera24’s production transposes the original 18th Century setting to 21st Century London with a witty, contemporary libretto, new orchestrations for a seven-piece orchestra and snappy staging to suit the contemporary surroundings of the Royal Pavilion, Southend’s newest arts venue.

It’s also the first time that opera has been performed 1.34 miles out to sea at the end of the world’ longest pleasure pier. When handsome young City traders, Guglielmo and Ferrando, boast of the faithfulness of their girlfriends, Fiordiligi and Dorabella, they are called upon to prove it.

Previous performances have been critically acclaimed and versatile conductor, John Jansson, will be familiar to jazz fans for his work with the London Jazz Sinfonia and Sir John Dankworth, but is equally renowned for his classical work.

He said: “Opera is full of fantastic music and gripping drama and Così Fan Tutte is no different. By creating contemporary productions, Opera 24 aims to reach out to opera virgins, whilst giving the cognoscenti a fresh look at a much-loved favourite, and from previous audience’s reactions, this Così really does have something for everyone.”

Artistic director Liz Lincoln said: “What could be more appropriate than taking Mozart's romantic masterpiece, giving it a witty, slick and sophisticated makeover and then staging it in a venue that also represents a modern take on a much-loved classic.

This version of Così will reward newcomers to the genre, just as much as seasoned opera lovers.”

Scott Dolling, Southend Council’s acting head of economy, regeneration and tourism, said: “We are delighted to welcome the acclaimed company Opera24 to the Royal Pavilion.

“We believe they and the audience will discover that this terrific venue at the end of our iconic Pier is an ideal location for a spectacular evening of opera.”

The evening begins at 6.30pm followed by the performance at 7.30pm.

Tickets are £35, including champagne and canapés reception, a programme and return fare for the pier train.
