Five gerations - Malcolm Bobin and his family

First published in News

FIVE generations of one family came together to celebrate the 99th birthday of a great, great grandfather.

Malcolm Bobin was treated to a slap up celebration at the Astral Lodge Residential Home, in Elsa Road, Westcliff, where he now lives.

His son Phil, Phil’s daughter Joanne and her three daughters, along with their five children, made sure the birthday treat went with a swing. The family were joined by friends and staff at the home as Mr Bobin was entertained by an organist during a party laid on at the home.

Mr Bobin worked alongside his brother at Bobins book shop in Victoria Plaza shopping centre, Southend. It later became Victory Books, but closed after 56 years and is now an Air Force recruitment centre.

Phil Bobin, 64, said: “Dad’s brother owned the shop in what was then the Talza Arcade and he worked with him for years. I can remember playing there when I was about eight.

“The party was a surprise for dad and he really enjoyed it.

Sadly my mother passed away 12 years ago, but he had about 45 people helping him celebrate his birthday.”

Levi Murfitt, a care assistant at the home, said: “Malcolm has beenwith us since November. He loved his birthday party. We had Eric And His Organ to entertain the residents.

“He played lots of old songs and everyone had a singalong and dance. Even Malcolm got up and had a dance. He had a lovely time.”
