PLANS for a revamped warmemorial on Canvey have moved a step forward with a £5,000 donation.

Canvey Island Town Council will be handing over the cash to refurbish the ageing memorial outside the Paddocks, in Long Road.

Plans to build a new memorial were given the green light during a Castle Point council meeting as the existing memorial is showing signs of decay.

Councillor Ray Howard, Conservative for Canvey Island West, said: “I am delighted the town council’s finance committee supported my request, discussed some finances and agreed to allocate £5,000 to the full council.”

Sandra Durant, 47, member of the war memorial hall committee, said: “I am very pleased they have come on board.

“It is for Canvey and that is what they are here for, so we are really chuffed.”

Canvey Island Independent Party councillor, Nick Harvey, added: “I am very pleased the council has recommended to put the money towards the memorial.”

The old memorial was built in 1926 on the corner of Craven Avenue and Long Road but was later moved to the Paddocks.

The new monument will remain at the same place and is currently being funded by the War Memorial Hall Committee.

Work on the new war memorial is due to begin after Armed Forces Day on Saturday, June 28, and is expected to be completed by Remembrance Sunday in November.
