Sofa torched in lifts at Cecil Court, Jones Close, Southend

Echo: Sofa torched in Southend tower block Sofa torched in Southend tower block

FIREFIGHTERS were called to a Southend tower block after a sofa in a lift was torched.

Crews were dispatched to Cecil Court in Jones Close just before 3am this morning after the furniture was set on fire.

The flaming couch was pulled out of the lift and taken outside the flats and doused.

There was smoke damage to the lift but no one was hurt in the fire.

Crews from Southend and Leigh fire stations attended the scene.

They were again sent to the same tower block at 4.45am after someone reported smelling smoke, but there was no new fire.

The arson has been reported to the police.

The irresponsible culpricks should be charged with attempted murder if ever caught. Some people are too stupid.

Legally that would be impossible. Read the article it says no-one was injured, therefore there is no victim for an attempted murder case.

I doubt the intention of whoever set fire to the sofa was to toast a few marshmallows. The fact nobody was injured is down to somebody being alerted to the fire and a responsive fire service. Imagine if the outcome was different, a lot of people could have been injured or worse.

I believe a number of the lifts in the tower blocks have cameras in so with any luck who ever put the sofa in the lift will be caught. Also check out who has had a new sofa delivered recently and pull the sofa apart for whats left in side
