CYCLISTS thanked pubs on Canvey after they raised hundreds of pounds for charity during a pedal-powered pub crawl.

Members of the South Benfleet Social Club got together to take part in a charity bike ride across the island.

The club, which holds various charity events annually and is based in Vicarage Hill, was raising cash for Cancer Research UK and appealed for help from pubs on the island.

Eight cyclists rode 12 miles around the island, making a stop at every pub.

They persuaded landlords, staff and regulars to join their cause by collecting money from customers.

They raised £1,000.

Dianne Waddilove, vice president at the South Benfleet Social Club, said: “We just want to say a big thank-you to all the pubs that helped us raise money on the day.

“We managed to raise £1,000 which we’re really pleased with.

To be honest, we would have struggled raising this money if it wasn’t for the pubs.”

“We really didn’t know where to go to collect money so decided to make a stop at pubs, have a small break and collect money at the same time.

“It worked out really well and we’re really happy with the result.”

It took the group six hours to complete the ride and they are nowhoping to organise a similar event in the summer.
