Pet shop visitors can hold a bearded dragon and other exotic pets

Echo: Hold a dragon day Hold a dragon day

A PET store is holding a reptile workshop in store for curious customers.

On Thursday, June 19, from 1pm to 2pm, visitors to the Pets at Home Southend store can meet reptiles such as snakes, bearded dragons and geckos.

Staff at the shop, on Southend Airport retail park, will allow customers to feed and hold some of the reptiles.

The workshops are a great way to learn about how to care for these types of animals if you are considering taking one on as a pet.

Jan Priest, assistant manager at the store, said: “A reptile workshop is a great opportunity to showcase our reptile expertise and also provide customers with the chance to learn a bit more about keeping and looking after these more unusual pets.”

Mark Smith, pet and reptile operations manager at Pets at Home, added: “Keeping reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates can be easy.”

IMO Pets at Home are hardly the best place to go to learn about reptiles. I am not saying many of their employees are not passionate about their jobs but beyond the bread and butter reptiles (bearded dragons etc, as mentioned in the article) P@H are hardly specialists and I know of at least two occasions when staff have given people I know wrong information about keeping reptiles.
To be perfectly honest, if you want to learn properly (and this is essential when it comes to keeping reptiles) you should ALWAYS go to a reputable, specialist reptile retailer or breeder who will ALWAYS (no workshop necessary) allow you to handle the animal if it is safe for you, and the animal, to do so. Specialist retailers can also often trace the origin/parentage of their animals, something I bet P@H staff cannot do, and some will also breed their own animals.
There are a few specialist retailers in and around Southend and I suggest you visit those first should you be thinking about owning a reptile or even if you are just curious.
Bottom line is that specialists reptile retailers not only often have a greater variety of animals but have a greater knowledge base and will have a more personal approach.
