Volunteers needed for Pretty Muddy, Basildon
A MAN who volunteers for Cancer Research UK in memory of his brother is urging others to help out at events which raise thousands for the charity.
Duncan Whitehead, 47, has volunteered for the charity since his brother died of cancer six years ago.
He spoke out as organisers of Cancer Research UK’s Pretty Muddy event at Gloucester Park, Basildon, on Saturday, June 28, are appealing for volunteers for the event.
Mr Whitehead said: “It was a way of giving back. It was something I could get involved in and make a positive contribution. My experience has been absolutely fantastic. It’s almost like a family of people who are involved.”
Marshals are needed for Pretty Muddy, where participants tackle the muddy assault course from 10am to 4.30pm.
Mr Whitehead, of Leigh Hall Road, Leigh, said: “Helping out at things like Race for Life and Pretty Muddy, you see people running, walking jogging and all taking part.
“You see people affected by cancer taking part on crutches or in wheelchairs. It’s fantastic the work they are doing, it’s inspiring.
“For me, it’s all about pitching in and enjoying the event. You hear some great stories and meet some fantastic people.
“Even if you are worried about standing up for six hours, it doesn’t matter, you can still get involved, they will find something you can do.”
Southend Race for Life organiser Gill Burgess said every event staged needs between 50 and 100 volunteers to make them happen.
She added: “Without our awesome team of volunteers, it simply would not be possible to put on events such as Pretty Muddy and Race for Life.
“It’s such a valuable role to play.
We strive to make sure all our volunteers are fully briefed and have an amazing experience at the events.
“The feedback I get from volunteers is usually extremely positive. They feel a sense of great satisfaction and achievement.”
She added: “It’s often a personal connection to cancer that motivates people to volunteer, but some are there simply tomeet people and have fun. Many of our volunteers return year after year. All our volunteers receive a T-shirt and refreshments.
No experience is necessary.”
