FOOTBALLERS will be playing in a tournament with a difference as they wear giant plastic bubbles in a kickabout for charity.

The bubble football tournament is being held by the Danny Green Fund at Leigh Beck Junior School, in Point Road, Canvey, on Sunday.

The fund was set up in memory of 11-year-old island youngster, Danny Green, who died in July 2012 of brain and spinal cancer. Event organises hope the day will raise more than £1,500 for the cause.

There will also be a fun day for families with bouncy castles, a barbeque, a beer tent, cake stalls, a coconut shy, a whack a rat stall, spin the wheel game, face painting and teachers in the stocks. Organiser Kate Frost, of Hannett Road, Canvey, said: “My son was Danny’s friend. It started off as a little thing but we now have 130 people coming.

“Both the Danny Green Fund and Indee Rose Fund (a Canvey charity which also supports children with spinal and brain tumours set up in memory of Indee Rose Dopson) are known across Canvey. We love doing this as a community, it really pulls everyone together.”

The bubble football will see sides from the Danny Green and Indee Rose funds go head-to-head with 25 teams already signed up.

Mrs Hannett said: “My son was friends with Danny a year before he fell ill. They were close and would walk to school together. This has brought everyone together. It was awful and I don’t want anyone to forget Danny, I wouldn’t want my son to be forgotten, so we will make sure Danny isn’t.”

All money raised will go to the Danny Green Fund, which was set up by Danny’s family to help young sufferers of the condition he had – posterior fossa syndrome. It is a rare condition which can occur after a brain tumour is surgically removed from the brain stem, causing loss of speech and the ability to swallow, weakness and poor balance. It leaves some children, as was the case with Danny, unable to hold up their heads, or walk.
