“MINDLESS thugs” caused more than £500 worth of damage to a popular park.

Vandals struck at Belfairs Park, on Eastwood Road North, Leigh, over the course of a two-week period.

They set fire to piles of timber, kicked the heads off sprinklers, and stole metal flag poles.

Pc Steve Wiggett, investigating officer, said: "We were contacted by Southend Council on Thursday morning who were reporting this incomprehensible destruction of property.

“It’s beyond belief why people would want to do this.

“We want to identify the culprits and bring them to justice, but we need the help of witnesses; anyone who saw the damage being done or those who may know the people responsible.”

He went on to brand the vandals “mindless thugs.”

The timber was worth £200, the sprinklers will cost approximately £250 to repair, and the flag poles were valued at arround £100.

Anyone with information in connection with the vandalism is urged to contact the Neighbourhood Crime Team at Southend police station on 101

It's the price public space has to pay for an increasingly lawless soceiety where there is no deterrant against this sort of thing.
Parenting, law enforcement and the justice system all play a crucial part in ensuring society functions in a peacful and harmonious way. However, all three are failing at an alarming rate.

Get real, for God's sake, a few flagpoles, which have been left out by a lazy groundsman, sprinklers left out by a lazy groundsman and timber left outside for ruin, all should be under lock and key.....Doh

What an idiotic comment, would you be saying the same if it was your garden wall?

If it's so minor in your view why don't you offer to pay for the damage and spare the time to fix it...

No thought not.

okay so id like to make a point here, how the hell can someone kick off a sprinkler head when they are sunken into the ground and pop up when in use, soaking anything near them, im pretty sure its total bull that any sprinklers have been damaged, if people are burning timber in the woods over a two week period, and not in one go, funnily enough, to me that sounds like people camping in the woods and making a camp fire, and on top of that "metal flag poles"? last time i went to those golf grounds they were all plastic and come in at around "£5" maybe less, there is by my count around 20 maybe 30 in the entire woods and other golf greens out of the woods,. lets do some maths here, 30x£5 is £150 20x£5 is £100, if you're telling me that these people reported to be in one specific park have taken the entirety of the flag poles in the woods i would sure be surprised, i cant imagine "yobo's" or "mindless vandals" taking that kind of time and effort. I think this is is being a bit blown over the top, did anyone ask these people what they were doing? are they really vandals with the intention to destroy public property? or are they kids f*ucking about camping in the woods having a bit of a giggle taking flags
