Benefit cheat swindled £13,000

Echo: Jemma Rose Donnelly, 35, appeared at Basildon Magistrates Court Jemma Rose Donnelly, 35, appeared at Basildon Magistrates Court

A BENEFIT cheat has avoided a jail term after swindling nearly £13,000.

Jemma Rose Donnelly, 35, failed to tell Basildon Council and the Department for Work and Pensions that her partner had moved into her house in Beauchamps Drive, Wickford.

She also did not reveal she had an additional bank account, and had received money from her partner.

During an appearance at Basildon Magistrates Court, Donnelly pleaded guilty to two counts of dishonestly failing to notify a change in circumstances.

She also admitted one count of making a false statement or representation to obtain benefits.

Donelly illegally claimed £12,798 in housing benefit and council tax benefit between March 2010 and June 2013.

Magistrates ordered her to back every penny.

She was also sentenced to a total of ten weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months.

Donnelly must complete 150 hours of unpaid work, and was also ordered to pay costs of £400.

Councillor Stuart Sullivan, cabinet member for resources, said: “Benefit fraud is theft and the cheats who try and get away with it are stealing from their neighbours, the residents of Basildon.

“In most cases, benefits are paid to those in genuine need of support.

“However, there are an unscrupulous few who think they can dishonestly dip into the public purse unnoticed and it is right and fitting that every penny will be repaid.”

150 hours community work for £12,398 (assuming she repays the £400 ordered to do so) = £82.65 per hour....what sort of message does send out the scrounging scum?

This kind of reporting is becoming monotonous and lazy

There is no hard and fast rule that says a 'benefit cheat' is going to jail anymore than there is a rule saying anyone found guilty of most crime will be going to jail.

Its like saying; 'A car thief has avoided jail for stealing a car'

'A man with no car insurance has avoided jail for having no etc' '

A shop lifter has avoided jail for etc'

It is slumped in the chair journalism.

“Benefit fraud is a drop in the ocean compared to expenses fiddled by MPs”. Do you actually believe this ridiculous statement?

I Very strongly feel my MP is on the fiddle, as she VERY rarely does any work full-stop. Three months to answer a simple yes or no question, and STILL waiting for it.

They can order what they like, if she hasn't go the money and may still depend on benefits, no hope!

they should be sent to prison and made to work 'inside' until they have earned enough to pay back what they nicked and pay for their keep in prion / hotels where they get better looked after than our frail elderly folk!

Time prisoners did work fro pay whilst in prison to compensate their victims and no release until that is done!i

I know its not right but I can understand why people do it. The press keeps peddling the lie that the economy is recovering however more people are in debt than ever & i suppose when you see undeserving people get away with it at both local & national level & the sheer waste of taxpayer money by the government on their pet projects the temptation is there.

you may have a point there, but it most certainly is a 'drop in the ocean' when compared to the tax dodging, and so called 'misselling (aka fraud) of the super rich and financial institutions....... and lets face it, a bit of benefits cheating goes straight back to exchequet anyway, by way of tax on booze, fags and lotto.......
