HOUSEHOLDERS have been condemned for piling up rubbish up outside a Canvey primaryschool– andurged to start recycling instead.

The bin outside St Joseph’s School, in Vaargen Road, gets so full, it is having to be emptied as much as four times a day, but is still overflowing with all sorts of waste.

Parents say nappies and other household waste, including rotting food, are being left in the bin, close to the school gates.

One, who didn’t want to be named, said: “It’s really not very nice at all.

“The people who do this sort of thing should haveabit more pride.

They should get rid of their rubbish in the appropriate way. like the rest of us do.”

JanPayne, Castle Point councillor for Canvey South, is also unhappyabout the situation.

She said: “On closer inspection, there is people’s household rubbish in there.

“I’ve spoken to council officers several times about it, but theysay there is nothing more they can do.

They empty the bin regularly, but people keep dumping their household rubbish there.

“We have a fantastic recycling system here. People need to use it instead of dumping their household waste in these bins.”

Castle Point Council has said it is aware of the problem – and insists it is doing what it can.

TomSkipp, councillor responsible for the environment, said: “Attempts were made to gather evidence from the offending refuse, but nothing was found.

“It is not an offence to deposit this type of refuse in litter bins, but where evidence is found, the parties concerned are notified the fortnightly black sack collections are the appropriate place for this type of waste.

“With the opportunity this council gives to residents to recycle, the majority of their household waste, the continuation of fortnightly black sack collections is adequate.”

The school said it had not receivedany complaints.
