Warning after toxic algae found in Basildon lake

Echo: Warning after toxic algae found in Basildon lake Warning after toxic algae found in Basildon lake

Toxic algae has contaminated the lake in a popular Basildon beauty spot.

Basildon Council is warning visitors to Northlands Park, off Felmores, to avoid the lake as it has been confirmed that blue-green algae has been found in the water.

Dog owners should prevent their pets from swimming the toxic water.

Hugh Reynolds, Basildon Council’s parks and countryside manager, said: “We have put up warning signs near Northlands Park lake, however it’s important that dog walkers steer clear of the water and keep their animals on leads so they aren’t tempted to jump in.

“We expect the algae to naturally disperse in a week or two, but until then we’re advising visitors to be mindful and seek medical or veterinary advice if they are affected.”

What has that photograph of the stumps of trees felled in Northlands Park last year have to do with toxic algae in the lake?

Apart from the fact that it's a photo of a tiny part of Northlands Park?

Surely there's a photo on file of one the lakes in the archives at The Echo?

If not send out an award winning journalist with a camera/smartphone to take one.

We can now expect thousands of pounds to be spent on fountains and filters just like Blake Meadows in Billericay to clean the water

I got to the "popular Basildon beauty spot" bit and couldn't read the rest through my tears of laughter.

It's not a true algae, it's a bacteria. Cyanobacteria may utilise photosynthesis but calling them blue-green algae isn't really accurate.

Deputy Leader Blakey lives close to this park and sings it praises as 'the best park in Basildon'.

Expect it to be having money spent on it.....

I was told by Mr Blake some time last year that they weren't going to be building any houses o this park. I didn't point out the building going on at the time behind the Community Centre though in case it made him short circuit.....
