New bike hire scheme at Southend station

Echo: New bike hire scheme at Southend station New bike hire scheme at Southend station

A NEW cycle hire scheme at Southend Victoria Station has been launched by Rochford and Southend East MP James Duddridge.

The scheme is part of Abellio Greater Anglia’s new Bike and Go initiative, the UK’s first major station cycle hire programme.

With the school holidays approaching, rail passengers will now be able to hire a bike at Southend Victoria and explore the town.

Andrew Goodrum, Abellio Greater Anglia’s customer service director, said: “The new Bike and Go facility will improve the service and choice we provide for our customers who are keen to cycle to and from their local station.

“Competitively priced and easy to use, Bike and Go complements other investments we are making.”

Mr Duddridge said: “I am delighted to officially launch the scheme.

“It provides further options for passengers for their onward journeys.

“I look forward to seeing lots of these bikes out and about in the constituency.”

An annual subscription costs £10 at www.bikeandgo.co.uk with daily hire priced at £3.80.

Good idea but it might help if there were facilities for subscriptions to be taken out at the time of first hire (rather than paid for in advance) for those "impulse" hirers (day trippers etc.) who did not plan to hire or did not know about the scheme.

Basildon tried having hire bikes a while ago. They quickly got mothballed and put into storage in the boiler room of the now demolished swimming pool.

Never been seen since. Wonder where they went and how much money was lost on the scheme?

I like the sound of it. If I can get from the station to the seafront cycleway without using pier hill, I think wifey and me would give it a try. But perhaps they could have an outlet at Chalkwell station so we could ride the seafront from there?

They should charge a returnable deposit like they do in Germany.
l paid 50 euros in Berlin about 6 years ago and in Darmstadt they charge 100 euros, but they are for electric bikes.
And l had to show my passport as l`m not a german national, a german would have been asked for their ausweise, id card.

Singapore has regulated cycle hire premises right along the built up section of a The Singapore River which gives many miles of cycling track.

When you hire the bikes you leave a photo ID like a driving licence or Passport or even a credit card in locked boxes, you then pay by the hour.

Because it is basically law abiding Police State it works very well.
