A COASTAL footpath was closed for three hours after a 50lb bomb was uncovered.
The police and coastguard closed the path between Shoebury Coastguard Station and Barge Pier Road, Shoebury, between midday and 3pm yesterday(JUL22) as the bomb squad blew up the Second World War shell.
The Penetrating Round Bomb, which was used to attack tanks, was discovered by workmen doing repairs to the sea wall near Barge Pier.
An army spokesman said: “A bomb disposal team from Colchester Troop, 621 Squadron, 11 EOD Regiment Royal Logistic Corps was called out to Barge Pier, Shoebury, just after 12 .45pm.
“The team was called out after a shell was found on the beach.
“On inspection the item was found to be a Second World War vintage 50lb artillery shell, which contained no explosives and did not present a danger.
“It was recovered for safe disposal.”
Ray Bailey, 71, of Parkanaur Avenue, Thorpe Bay, was out cycling when he encountered the road block.
He said: “Access was denied along Barge Pier Road towards the Barge Pier cycle way.
“Everything seemed to be handled well.”
East Beach, Shoebury, was closed for seven weeks in May and June after 13 mortar and arillery shells and a dozen machine guns were uncovered at the end of April.
