SOUTHEND has been named as one of the most expensive places to holiday in the UK, according to a bookings website.

Cheaprooms.co.uk carried out a survey of the most costly hotels at seaside resorts in the country, and Southend has made the top 20.

According to the survey, an average hotel in the borough will set holidaymakers back £71 a night during August.

St. Ives in Cornwall and Tenby in Wales topped the list, with average prices of £123 and £107 respectively.

A spokesman for Cheaprooms.co.uk said: “The prices shown reflect the average daily rate for each destination’s cheapest available double room (minimum: 3-star hotel, guest house or B&B) for the time period spanning August 2014.”

The likes of Whitby in North Yorkshire, Oban in Scotlannd, and Falmouth in Cornwall were some of the locations on the list.

No other seaside resorts in Essex made the final cut.
