A DETERMINED mum is encouraging people to grab a blindfold and take part in a sponsored walk for her blind son.

George Stanbrook-Evans is completely blind after being born 16 weeks early, weighing only one pound 12 ounces.

The five-year-old has no sight at all in his right eye and doctors are still testing to see if any sight remains in his left.

Mum Clare Stanbrook-Evans, 31, a Met police officer, said: “When George was born he was so small and spent a lot of time in hospital. He was ventilated and the blood vessels in his eyes didn’t develop properly.

“To date we have been told he has no sight at all. If he has any it will be in his left but at the moment we think there is nothing.”

Despite his disability, Clare says George, who is an only child, is amazing. “George is my inspiration,”

she said. “He has already overcome so much in such a short space of time and in my eyes he is a little trooper who just gets on with his disability.”

Clare is organising a charity blind walk to raise money for the Royal National Institute of Blind People on Saturday September 13, at Northlands Park in Pitsea.

The event will pair fundraisers together. One will be blindfolded while the other will act as their guide to navigate the one mile long course. The aim of the event is to raise as much money as possible for the RNIB as well as giving fundraisers an understanding of what it’s like to be temporarily blind.

Clare, of Pitsea, added: “We are still learning all about George’s condition and how he deals with things.

“He really has been the inspiration behind this event.

“I’ve put on a blindfold to walk and I don’t know how he does it.

“He is so amazing and just gets on with it.”

The family are hoping as many people as possible will sign up for the sponsored walk, which will starts at 11am.
